Cardiff University

The Twang playing at the University on a rainy Sunday evening was more than the perfect excuse to book a Monday off and get amongst some now rare but always welcomed Sunday drinking with your mates. So with out further a do it was a few swift ales and University bound for the Sunday service.

The first thing that struck me was the change in crowd compared to those that gathered at The Point in Cardiff bay for The Twang’s last visit to Cardiff. Lets just say tonight’s audience didn’t resemble a football terrace crew as much as it did the last time. I’m not saying that the same faces weren’t there but they seemed to be somewhat over run by the new Twang following. Although the show hadn’t fully sold out (or so I was told) unlike the majority of other shows on the tour, those that showed up were definitely game for a hefty dose of some loose dancing to the infectious tunes courtesy of the boys from Brum.

Let’s make no mistake these boys are bang up for what they do and the show put on again tonight only goes to confirm that. Unfazed by their new found fame the boys seemed just as up for it tonight as they did at the start of the year in a venue only 500 strong. Some have questioned Saunder’s contribution to the act but they obviously haven’t seen this lot live. The additional vocal and general stage presence of Saunder’s puts The Twang in a league of their own and deservedly so. A set list oozing attitude and sing-alongs the later of which hitting fever point during the debut single “Wide Awake” made tonight’s performance a belter.

It’s been a while since I’ve danced all the way through a gig and if you manage to stay routed at one these shows you’re either deaf or too drunk. With the band playing Barfly then The Point and now the University it seems the boys are making a rapid climb up the ladder, and with live shows like this coupled with the best album so far this year that isn’t a surprise at all.
