SixOneSeven

Oxjam Music Festival - Callaghans by Vicki Angulatta

We at Beatrwtz were invited along to Callaghans to check out local band Six One Seven and after being assured that these boys were "destined for great things" and as this is for charity how could we possibly refuse.

After what seemed the longest sound check in music history by the headline act, the first band Six One Seven took to the stage an hour and half late but it is fair to say that these boys were certainly worth the wait.  This trio have a passion and  intensity that is all too rarely found in today's music scene and to a backdrop of Transformer cartoons, which added a slightly surreal element to the gig, Andrew Bell's rolling drums took us into the first song "Shotgun" which was a perfect song to showcase the vocal talent of Scott Giles. With a gravelly yet melodic voice that is slightly reminiscent of that of Stereophonics Kelly Jones, the band launched into the highly infectious "Maps" and the backing vocals and smooth bass playing of Nic Heslop  adds a depth and feeling to the music that is all too rare with the latest outpouring of today's new bands.  All the songs seem have a toe tapping, head nodding, dance inducing element to them and "Lounging" is no different, listen to this once and you will be singing this for the next week.  After an all too quick 30 minutes the set finished to rapturous applause and cries of "encore" and the band duly obliged and launch into the hook filled "Fall my Way" again packed full with melodies and strong vocals, both lead and backing left me thinking that this band should surely have been a headlining act.

It is a travesty that these fine musicians are currently unsigned but I have no doubt that record labels will soon be forming an orderly queue at the door. Six One Seven manage to transcend the asinine qualities that are all too apparent in today's teenage rock scene and their confident and accomplished musicianship belies their young age.

Be sure to catch this band if you get the chance, I can assure you that you won't be disappointed.

Oxjam we salute you!
