Break The Silence
Label: Demolition Records
This coming January sees the release of
Brighton rockers, McQueen’s debut album Break The Silence. Since the
band got together in November 2003 they have been building up a quite a
reputation with their live shows, supporting the likes of Juliette Lewis and
the Licks, Foo Fighters and the Kaiser Chiefs. As well as smaller acts like
Japan’s electro kids Mad Capsule Markets and celebrity BB contestant Donny
Tourette’s cliché rock band Towers of London. The girls have also appeared
on the recent tour of fellow Welsh lads Dirty Sanchez.
All the hard touring has paid off for
McQueen as they have just signed to independent label Demolition Records,
who have brought us acts from Electric Eel Shock right through to glam
metallers Hanoi Rocks and Twisted Sister. Break The Silence was
produced by up and coming producer Richie Kayvan and this is something for
him to be proud of. From the opening track ‘Neurotic’ there starts off a
snarl to the album which reminded me of Kittie. Leah Dours sounds like she
ready to take on the world, this is one angry record. Whether it be the
pure catchiness of the single ‘Running out of things to say’ or the
fury of ‘Not for sale’ there is some great tracks here. My personal
favourite is the title track ‘Break the silence’.
There is a lot of different styles coming
through in this record from grunge to garage punk but it does not lose any
of its charm. If you like female rock bands such as L7, Kittie or Julliette
and the Licks then this album is for you. These girls deserve big things
but a feel the fact that they are not American is going to hold them back.
