Enamored with
the dirty sexiness that was the dark counterpart of the shiny 60s, Modern
Clichés seems intent in producing that sort of twisted pop that is great to
take off your clothes and fumble in the dark.
The
sharp-suited trio is clearly inspired by Mod-father, Mr. Paul Weller, and
the legacy he has left with his music and the iconic power of his persona;
but they are able to actualize the sound into something vaguely sinister,
even in the brilliance of the their pop sensibility.
The bass line
and the entire rhythm session, always prominent within their sound, are
clearly what makes Falseness & Fairytales’ sound just a little bit darker
and dirtier.
Especially on
Exactly the same as Always, supported by the almost blasé tone of Phil’s
vocals, the Modern Clichés manage to turn pop into a three minute film-noir
where the only thing missing a femme fatale smoking a Gauloise.
For my part I
dusted off my pin striped suit, my slim-cut tie and I am searching eBay for
a deal on a vesper. The 60s may be gone, but the spirit remains, young, sexy
and just a little bit dirty. Just how I like it.
Grab a copy of
Falseness & Fairytales, time traveling has never been so much fun.
