GET CAPE. WEAR CAPE. FLY

Studio Bar Merthyr Tydfil September 16th

I had never visited the Studio Bar in Merthyr until tonight but I was pleasantly suprised.  It can only be described as what looked like an old cinema or theatre converted into a larger scale Tj’s (Newport).  The fruit machines, pool tables in the back and slush puppy machine on the bar coloured the atmoshpere for the evenings entertainment well.  With local acts “Said Mike” and “The Guns” providing some good enthusiastic support it was left to “Get Cape” (aka) Sam Duckworth, to slightly mellow proceedings with his blend of  electronic, but acoustic tales of run ins with bnp members and his needing to escape his home town of essex.

The laptop being accompanied by a live drummer and the occasional appearance from a horn blower “Once more with feeling” was the opener followed closely by “An Oak Tree”.  It was clear that already he had captured his audience, and it appeared that everyone there already seemed to realise how lucky they were to have caught such an intimate show with a guy destined for much bigger things.  First song off the now much thought after debut ep , “I Spy” backing vocals of, “face in the crowd” courtesy of the female following was followed by a cherpy rendition of the Steve Miller Band’s “Abracadabra” (one for the bar staff I think).  Sam certainly isn’t as extravegant as acts like the Super Furry Animals or The Flaming Lips but with such well penned songs it easy to see where he draws his confidence to deliver what so far is an impressive and encouraging display of new music with one of the barest stages I’ve seen for a long while

It was time for the man behind the drums to vacate and give Sam his space to go solo with songs “If I had a £1” and “Glasshouses”.  This I feel is where Sam is at his best, all be it not a huge crowd he plays with such belief that it isn’t diffcult to believe the hype.  To be rejoined on stage by his drummer Get Cape Wear Cape Fly ends what can only be described as an inspirational set to the thousands wanting to be in his shoes with his two singles “Call me Ishmael” and “Chronicals pt 1”.  An energetic yet tuneful end to a great performance.  Keep an eye out for this lad if feel we’ll be hearing alot more from him and his apple in the coming months.  Believe the hype.
