Birthing The Giant

Label: Hassle

May 2004 saw the creation of the band that is Cancer Bats.  Formed by singer Liam Cormier and guitarist Scott Middleton (ex-At The Mercy Of Inspiration), they recruited Andrew McCracken on bass and Mike Peters on drums.  The band was started as a side project to blend all the bands influences into a unique sound.  By January 2005 the band had self-released a demo and started touring all over North America and quickly gaining respect with their intense live shows.

Now in 2006 the eagerly awaited album has arrived in the shape of 'Birthing The Giant'. Produced by Gavin Brown who’s also worked with Billy Talent, the only way to describe this album is explosive!  It's a mix of hardcore, southern metal and punk rock put together to create a sleazy rock and roll noise.  From the opening track 'Golden Thanks' it instantly sounds different to whats around at the moment. Theres no whiney emo vocals here just the sound of someone pissed off, Cormier's lyrics seem quite dark but complement the sound of the Cancer Bats.  The guitar riffs of Middleton are what give the album its rock and roll edge and you can't help loving McCracken's heavy bass lines.  The best tracks on 'Birthing The Giant' are 'Golden Thanks', 'Shilleagh', 'Firecrack This' and the single '100 Grand Canyon'.  This band reminded me of a mix of The Bronx, John Holmes, Motorhead and Refused, so if you like these bands then this album is the one for you.

After recently playing a few dates on this years Taste Of Chaos tour, Cancer Bats are joining Moneen for a U.K tour this month.  So if you want to see what the fuss is about before they explode on the music scene, check them out!
