Disproving the stereotype that movie stars make terrible musicians, Jared Leto’s band 30 Seconds to Mars is far from being a self indulgent project of a bored actor. The 1st single to be released in the UK, The Attack has a sound that, if there is still someone that knows how to recognise a hit at the BBC, will, in the near future, feature heavily in the Radio 1 play-list. What is immediately recognisable in this song is a feeling of contemporaneity, something that does not come across (as some critics as suggested) like a well marketed product for the ever so hungry horde of teenage listeners, but that’s instead has a clear voice a sharp image of a genuine artist that also happens to be an accomplished actor. Some people have it all, as sickening as it may be to the general public.
Jared Let’s vocals reminds me of Geoff Rickly of Thursday and the feeling that they are able to convey it’s, at the same time, abrasive and heartfelt, something that can easily put 30 seconds to Mars on the same tableau of the more celebrated MCR.
There is a modern sense of alienation sparking across the lyrics:
I would have kept you, forever, but we had to sever But there is also a defiance that makes the majestic chorus is an instant hook, something hopeful and angry at the same time.
Run away, run away, I'll attack
Already darlings of MTV2 in America (their outstanding video for The Kill won last best video), 30 Second to Mars are now heading over the UK and this single is the perfect calling card. Catchy and passionate without being corny this song and this band are a welcomed addiction to the plethora of bands that, leaded by the aforementioned MCR, are able to marry a modern sense of alienation and the desire to overcome it, with a music that appeals to an audience experiencing the turmoil of growing up.
Welcome 30 Second to Mars. The future looks bright.
