CLERKS 2

Director: Kevin Smith. Cast: Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, Rosario Dawson and Trevor Fehrman.

Back in 1994 Kevin Smith made his first film, made by maxing out several credit cards and filmed in the shop where he worked. This film became the incredibly funny cult hit Clerks. Over a decade later we hear that he’s going to make a sequel and much rejoicing is done by Smith’s fans.

Being one of those fans, my first thoughts are could it be as funny as the first and within a few minutes it becomes quite obvious that this film is going to be hysterical. It’s now ten years from when we left the two best friends Randal (Anderson) and Dante (O’Halloran). Pretty much nothing has changed for the two slackers. Dante is still having women trouble and the dilemma of what to do with his life and we have Randal hating everything and everyone. With Randal burning down the Quick Stop we find them now working in fast food restaurant Mooby’s. As there is now no Quick Stop to hang around in front of Jay and Silent Bob have also migrated and have found a new home outside Mooby’s.

For me there a four stars in this film. My favourite character from the first film is also my favourite in this one, Jay. This has nothing to do with the character having the same name as myself; it’s down to the fact of Jason Mewes stealing every scene he’s in. I defy anyone not to laugh at his impersonation of the killer from Silence of the Lambs. Bringing Jay’s sidekick  Silent Bob back to the big screen is none other than the writer/director himself, as before Silent Bob’s comedy coming from his facial expressions and subtle understated actions. The third of the best characters like in the original is Randal, without any question Randal has the best dialogue in the whole film and Anderson delivers it as deadpan as ever. The last star of this film is a new character Elias, a Christian, Lord of the Rings loving burger flipping clerk. Trevor Fehrman is the actor who breaths life into the character of Elias and I think this is going to be the first of many great comedic performances he's going to be remembered for.

Fans of Smith’s films are going to love this. You are going to laugh from start to finish, which is down to the films great dialogue and the performances of the films cast. Nothing seems to be taboo to Smith, he’s made joke of the Catholic Church in Dogma and Clerks 2 is no exception making us laugh at racism and beastiality. One of the films highlights is Randal taking Elias and another Hobbit lover to pieces over which is better, the Lord of the Rings films or the original Star Wars trilogy.

If you haven’t seen Clerks you should see it first, then get to the nearest Cineplex and see it’s outrageously funny sequel.

I’ll leave you all with a quote from Elias…

“Since God created man, and man created the Transformers, the Transformers are like a gift from God!”
